Polyimide film is one of the earliest products of polyimide, used for insulation of motor slots and cable wrapping materials. The main products include DuPont Kapton, Ube Xingchan's Upilex series, and Zhongyuan Apical. Transparent polyimide film can serve as a soft solar cell substrate. IKAROS's sails are made of polyimide films and fibers, which can be used for filtering hot gases. Polyimide yarns can separate dust and special chemicals from exhaust gases.
Coatings: Used as insulation paint for electromagnetic wires or as high-temperature resistant coatings.
Advanced composite materials: used in aerospace, aircraft, and rocket components. It is one of the most heat-resistant structural materials. For example, the supersonic aircraft program in the United States is designed with a speed of 2.4M, a surface temperature of 177 ℃ during flight, and a required service life of 60000 hours. It has been reported that 50% of the structural materials are carbon fiber reinforced composite materials based on thermoplastic polyimide matrix resin, with a usage of approximately 30t per aircraft.
Fiber: Its elastic modulus is second only to carbon fiber, and it is used as a filtering material for high-temperature media and radioactive substances, as well as bulletproof and fire-resistant fabrics. Changchun, China produces various polyimide products.
Foam plastic: used as high temperature resistant and heat insulating material.
Engineering plastics: There are both thermosetting and thermoplastic types, which can be molded by compression molding, injection molding, or transfer molding. Mainly used for self-lubricating, sealing, insulation, and structural materials. Guangcheng polyimide material has been applied in mechanical components such as compressor blades, piston rings, and special pump seals.
Separation membrane: used for the separation of various gas pairs, such as hydrogen/nitrogen, nitrogen/oxygen, carbon dioxide/nitrogen, or methane, to remove moisture from air hydrocarbon feed gases and alcohols. It can also be used as a pervaporation membrane and ultrafiltration membrane. Due to its heat resistance and resistance to organic solvents, polyimide plays a particularly important role in the separation of organic gases and liquids.
